QIRIMTATAR VİKİPEDİYASINIÑ MALÜMATI

Serbest Entsiklopediyа: Writing the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia — a marathon dedicated to the anniversary of the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia, supported by the Representation of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and NGO "Wikimedia Ukraine." The marathon will take place from January 12 to 27, 2025 and will focus on creating and improving articles on essential topics currently missing in the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia.

About the Marathon

[kodunı deñiştir]

This year, the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia celebrates its 17th anniversary!

In the context of the temporary occupation of Crimea and systematic Russian repressions against Crimean Tatars, preserving cultural heritage is especially vital. The Crimean Tatar Wikipedia plays a unique role as a tool for cultural diplomacy, education, and international dialogue.

The Crimean Tatar Wikipedia is the only online encyclopedia in the Crimean Tatar language, making it an essential platform for promoting the history, culture, and language of the Crimean Tatar people. The marathon aims not only to increase the number of articles but also to improve their quality, ensuring high standards of informational content.

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, approximately 30,000 articles have already been created. This is a significant contribution to the development of free knowledge in the Crimean Tatar language.

However, many key topics remain underdeveloped: some fundamental concepts are missing, or existing articles are too brief.

We invite you to join the article marathon dedicated to the 17th anniversary of the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia! Together, we can do more to advance knowledge in the native language.

How to Participate

[kodunı deñiştir]

To join the marathon, you need to fill out the registration form. Then, create and/or improve as many articles as possible during the period of January 12–27, 2025.

The marathon will be held in two categories:

  • 1000 articles that should exist in all language editions of Wikipedia;
  • 250 articles related to Ukraine, Crimea, Crimean Tatar culture and traditions, historical figures, etc.

All participants of the contest will compete for prizes and souvenirs. The organizers will award ten participants who make the most significant contributions during the entire marathon (according to Wikipedia's rules and requirements). Additional prizes and nominations may also be announced, so stay tuned for updates.

To support participants, we plan to hold a webinar where we will share tips and techniques for writing quality articles.

  • Webinar date: January 18 at 5:00 PM

Participation Rules

[kodunı deñiştir]

All contributions within the marathon must comply with Wikipedia's rules.

Specifically:

  • Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Therefore, all articles must have an encyclopedic nature.
  • Wikipedia does not allow plagiarism. Articles must contain text written by the participant and must not violate copyright.
    • Articles can be translated from other language editions of Wikipedia (e.g., Ukrainian or English) — but the source of the article must be cited when translating.
  • Wikipedia does not allow original research. All non-obvious claims must be supported by sources. Articles must be based on information previously published in reliable sources (newspapers, journals, books, etc.) and include references to these sources.

To learn more about how to create an article and Wikipedia's rules, use the help page.

Note: For this particular marathon, we are writing articles exclusively in the Crimean Tatar language and only on topics from the lists provided by the organizers (i.e., essential articles). You are always welcome to edit Wikipedia on other topics or in other languages, but such contributions will not count toward this marathon.

How to create an article

[kodunı deñiştir]

To create articles, it is convenient to use the translation tool to translate an already existing article from Ukrainian or another language. To do this:

  1. Register on Wikipedia (you can do it via this link, registration takes two minutes) and log in to your account.
  2. Choose the article you want to translate and the language version you want to translate from (the plus sign with a green background in the list of suggested articles leads to this article in another language section; see the screenshot).
  3. Open the translation tool via this link.
  4. Click the "New translation" button (screenshot).
  5. Select the language you will translate from (screenshot).
  6. Find the article in the search bar in the language from which you will translate the article into Crimean Tatar (screenshot).
  7. Click the blue "Start translation" button.
  8. Translate the article paragraph by paragraph.
  9. After finishing your work, publish the article (screenshot).

Although translation may be the fastest way to create an article, you are not required to use it. You can also write an article from scratch by following the rules outlined above (note that you cannot copy text from external sources, even if it is a translation from another language. You can only translate text verbatim from other language versions of Wikipedia; otherwise, the text must be written independently).
