Exécuté pour un personnage de haut rang, ce magnifique manuscrit des Histoires de prophètes met en scène, en vingt miniatures, les épisodes bibliques retenus par la tradition islamique. Celle-ci reconnaît Jésus en tant que prophète, mais nie sa filiation divine. La scène reproduite ici pourrait être attribuée à Sâdeq Bêg (1533-1610), l’un des grands peintres de l’atelier royal safavide de Qazvîn. Reprenant plusieurs légendes musulmanes, elle représente l’enfant Jésus assis sur les genoux de sa mère, au pied d’un palmier qui s’est couvert de dattes à son contact et près d’une source d’eau fraîche qui a jailli là miraculeusement.

La Vierge Marie, qui a fui dans le désert pour accoucher, porte une robe dont les couleurs sont d’inspiration chrétienne, mais dont le style est typiquement persan. Les visages de Marie et de Jésus sont entourés de nimbes flammés d’or caractérisant l’état spirituel des prophètes. À l’arrière plan, de derrière les rochers, émerge la figure sombre d’un homme barbu, aux cheveux longs, qui pourrait être Satan.

Executed for a high ranking character, this magnificent manuscript of prophets stories stages, in twenty miniatures, the biblical episodes selected by the Islamic tradition. This one recognizes Jesus as a prophet, but denies his divine filiation. The scene reproduced here could be attributed to Sâdeq Mêg (1533-1610), one of the great painters of the Royal Safavide workshop of Qazvîn. Resuming several Muslim legends, it represents the Child Jesus sitting on the knees of his mother, at the foot of a palm tree which has been covered with dates to his contact and near a source of fresh water that sprung there miraculously. .

The Virgin Mary, who fled in the desert to give birth, wears a dress whose colors are of Christian inspiration, but whose style is typically Persian. The faces of Mary and Jesus are surrounded by flamed golden nimbes characterizing the spiritual state of the prophets. In the background, from behind the rocks, emerges the dark figure of a bearded man with long hair, which could be Satan.
